Lesson 2 - sentence structure

In general, Hebrew sentences are constructed Subject-Verb-Object, like in English.
Hebrew verbs are conjugated by number, person, and gender.


English Transliteration Hebrew
I speak Hebrew. a-ni me-da-ber iv-rit. אני מדבר עברית.
I speak English. a-ni me-da-be-ret an-glit. אני מדברת אנגלית.
You play basketball. a-ta me-sa-khek ka-dur-sal. אתה משחק כדורסל.
You play soccer. at me-sa-khek-et ka-du-re-gel. את משחקת כדורגל.
He likes shawarma. hu o-hev sha-war-ma. הוא אוהב שווארמה.
She likes falafel. hi o-he-vet fa-la-fel. היא אוהבת פלאפל.
We are visiting friends. a-nakh-nu me-va-krim kha-ve-rim. אנחנו מבקרים חברים.
We are visiting family. a-nakh-nu me-va-krot mish-pa-kha. אנחנו מבקרות משפחה.
You prefer beer. a-tem ma-a-dif-im bi-ra. אתם מעדיפים בירה.
You prefer wine. a-ten ma-a-dif-ot ya-yin. אתן מעדיפות יין.
They are renting an apartment. hem sokh-rim di-ra. הם שוכרים דירה.
They are renting a house. hen sokh-rot ba-yit. הן שוכרות בית.
I want to speak Hebrew. a-ni ro-tse le-da-ber iv-rit. אני רוצה לדבר עברית.
I want to speak English. a-ni ro-tsa le-da-ber an-glit. אני רוצה לדבר אנגלית.
You have to play basketball. a-ta kha-yav le-sa-khek ka-dur-sal. אתה חייב לשחק כדורסל.
You have to play soccer. at kha-ye-vet le-sa-khek ka-du-re-gel. את חייבת לשחק כדורגל.
He likes to eat shawarma. hu o-hev le-e-khol sha-war-ma. הוא אוהב לאכול שווארמה.
She likes to eat falafel. hi o-he-vet le-e-khol fa-la-fel. היא אוהבת לאכול פלאפל.
Can we visit friends? a-nakh-nu ye-kho-lim le-va-ker kha-ve-rim? אנחנו יכולים לבקר חברים?
Can we visit family? a-nakh-nu ye-kho-lot le-va-ker mish-pa-kha? אנחנו יכולות לבקר משפחה?
Do you prefer to drink beer? a-tem ma-a-dif-im lish-tot bi-ra? אתם מעדיפים לשתות בירה?
Do you prefer to drink wine? a-ten ma-a-dif-ot lish-tot ya-yin? אתן מעדיפות לשתות יין?
They need to rent an apartment. hem tsri-khim lis-kor di-ra. הם צריכים לשכור דירה.
They need to rent a house. hen tsri-khot lis-kor ba-yit. הן צריכות לשכור בית.
