Lesson 28 - dual

In addition to singular and plural, Hebrew also has 'dual' form for many words.
The dual ending is represented by יים-  (a-yim).


English Transliteration Hebrew
two shta-yim, shna-yim שתיים, שניים
two hours sha-a-ta-yim שעתיים
two days yo-ma-yim יומיים
two weeks shvu-a-yim שבועיים
two months khod-sha-yim חודשיים
two years shna-ta-yim שנתיים
two hundred ma-ta-yim מאתיים
two thousand al-pa-yim אלפיים
twice pa-a-ma-yim פעמיים
socks gar-ba-yim גרביים
shoes na-a-la-yim נעליים
hands ya-da-yim ידיים
legs (even for four-legged animals) rag-la-yim רגליים
pants mikh-na-sa-yim מכנסיים
eyeglasses mish-ka-fa-yim משקפיים
eyes ei-na-yim עיניים
ears oz-na-yim אוזניים
bicycle o-fa-na-yim אופניים
teeth (all of them, not just two) shi-na-yim שניים

English Transliteration Hebrew
Two plus two equals four. shta-yim ve-od shta-yim sha-ve ar-ba. שתיים ועוד שתיים שווה ארבע.
I will be there in two hours. a-ni eh-ye sham tokh sha-a-ta-yim. אני אהיה שם תוך שעתיים.
We fly to Tel Aviv two days from now.a-nakh-nu ta-sim le-tel a-viv be-od yo-ma-yim. אנחנו טסים לתל אביב בעוד יומיים.
We have a meeting in two weeks. yesh la-nu pgi-sha be-od shvu-a-yim. יש לנו פגישה בעוד שבועיים.
They immigrated to Israel two months ago.hem a-lu le-is-ra-el lif-nei khod-sha-yim. הם עלו לישראל לפני חודשיים.
We lived in Israel for two years. gar-nu be-is-ra-el shna-ta-yim. גרנו בישראל שנתיים.
The bill for dinner was 200 shekels.ha-khesh-bon le-a-ru-khat ha-e-rev ha-ya ma-a-ta-yim shka-lim.החשבון לארוחת הערב היה מאתיים שקלים.
My rent costs 2000 shekels per month.skhar ha-di-ra she-li o-le al-pa-yim shka-lim le-kho-desh.שכר הדירה שלי עולה אלפיים שקלים לחודש.
I went to the store twice today. ha-lakh-ti la-kha-nut pa-a-ma-yim ha-yom. הלכתי לחנות פעמיים היום.
I wear socks when I wear shoes. a-ni go-re-vet gar-ba-yim ka-a-sher a-ni no-e-let na-a-la-yim.אני גורבת גרביים כאשר אני נועלת נעליים.
Wear gloves if your hands are cold. le-vash kfa-fot im ha-ya-da-yim she-lakh ka-rot. לבש כפפות אם הידיים שלך קרות.
She has nice legs. yesh la rag-la-yim ya-fot. יש לה רגליים יפות.
Religious women don’t wear pants. na-shim da-ti-yot lo lov-shot mikh-na-sa-yim. נשים דתיות לא לובשות מכנסיים.
I broke my eyeglasses. sha-var-ti et ha-mish-ka-fa-yim she-li. שברתי את המשקפיים שלי.
You have beautiful eyes. yesh lakh ei-na-yim ya-fot. יש לך עיניים יפות.
His ears are huge. ha-oz-na-yim she-lo a-na-ki-yot. האוזניים שלו ענקיות.
I ride my bike to school.a-ni ro-khev al ha-o-fa-na-yim she-li le-beit ha-se-fer. אני רוכב על האופניים שלי לבית הספר.
Teeth are white. shi-na-yim hen le-va-not. שיניים הן לבנות.
