Lesson 8 - prefixes

There are seven one-letter prefixes in Hebrew, plus כש, which is two one-letter prefixes combined into one.


English Transliteration Hebrew
IN, ON, AT, BY be..., ba... ב...
Dogs love to run in the park. kla-vim o-ha-vim la-ruts ba-park. כלבים אוהבים לרוץ בפארק.
Meet me at 4pm. pe-gosh o-ti be-ar-ba a-kha-rei ha-tso-ho-ra-yim. פגוש אותי בארבע אחרי הצהריים.
How much does this cost in dollars? ka-ma ze o-le be-do-la-rim? כמה זה עולה בדולרים?
I write only in black pen. a-ni ko-tev rak be-et sha-khor. אני כותב רק בעט שחור.
Do you want tahini on the shawarma? a-ta ro-tse tkhi-na ba-sha-war-ma? אתה רוצה טחינה בשווארמה?
TO, FOR le..., la... ל...
In my opinion. le-da-a-ti. לדעתי.
I don't have any money. ein li ke-sef. אין לי כסף.
The bus is going to Tel Aviv. ha-o-to-bus no-se-a le-tel a-viv. האוטובוס נוסע לתל אביב.
Mother cooked soup for the baby. i-ma bish-la ma-rak la-ti-nok. אימא בשלה מרק לתינוק.
I tell my wife every day that I love her. a-ni o-mer la-ish-ti be-khol yom she-a-ni o-hev o-ta. אני אומר לאשתי בכל יום שאני אוהב אותה.
FROM, OF, THAN me..., mi... מ...
She's from France. hi mi-tsar-fat. היא מצרפת.
I will be here from 6pm until 9pm. a-ni e-he-ye kan mi-shesh ad tesha. אני אהיה כאן מ18:00 עד 21:00.
Tuna comes from the ocean. tu-na ba-a me-ha-ok-ya-nos. טונה באה מהאוקיאנוס.
They have lived here longer than us. hem ga-ru po yo-ter me-i-ta-nu. הם גרו פה יותר מאיתנו.
The salad is made of tomatoes and cucumbers. ha-sa-lat mur-kav me-ag-va-ni-yot u-mi-me-la-fe-fo-nim. הסלט מורכב מעגבניות וממלפפונים.
LIKE, AS, ABOUT ke..., ki... כ...
I moved to Israel about two years ago. a-li-ti la-a-rets lif-nei ke-shna-ta-yim. עליתי לארץ לפני כשנתיים.
The operation will take about 2 hours. ha-ni-tu-akh ye-e-rakh ke-sha-a-ta-yim. הניתוח יארך כשעתיים.
About half of Israelis are Sefardic. ke-kha-tsi me-ha-is-re-e-lim hem mi-mo-tsa sfa-ra-di. כחצי מהישראלים הם ממוצא ספרדי.
He used the rolling pin as an assualt weapon. hu hish-ta-mesh ba-ma-a-rokh ki-khli tki-fa. הוא השתמש במערוך ככלי תקיפה.
Everything seems as usual. ha-kol nir-e ka-ra-gil. הכל נראה כרגיל.

Did I tell you that I'm visiting Canada in June? a-mar-ti lakh she-a-ni no-se-a le-ka-na-da be-yu-ni? אמרתי לך שאני נוסע לקנדה ביוני?
I think so. a-ni kho-shev she-ken. אני חושב שכן.
They said that there is no way that we can get in. hem am-ru she-ein shum de-rekh she-nu-khal le-hi-ka-nes. הם אמרו שאין שום דרך שנוכל להיכנס.
WHEN kshe... כש...
You should use an umbrella when it rains. a-ta tsa-rikh le-hish-ta-mesh ba-mi-tri-ya kshe-yo-red ge-shem. אתה צריך להשתמש במטרייה כשיורד גשם.
Take off your shoes when you enter our house. to-rid et ha-na-a-la-yim kshe-a-ta nikh-nas la-ba-yit she-la-nu. תוריד את הנעליים כשאתה נכנס לבית שלנו.
Shut the door when you leave. sgor et ha-de-let kshe-a-ta yo-tse. סגור את הדלת כשאתה יוצא.
Look at me when I'm talking to you. tis-ta-kel a-lai kshe-a-ni me-da-ber e-lei-kha. תסתכל עלי כשאני מדבר אליך.
When I smell food, I get hungry. kshe-a-ni me-ri-akh o-khel, a-ni ra-ev. כשאני מריח אוכל, אני רעב.
THE ha... ה...
Open the window. ptakh et ha-kha-lon. פתח את החלון.
The rug is dirty. ha-sha-ti-akh me-lukh-lakh. השטיח מלוכלך.
Get your feet off the table. to-rid et ha-rag-la-yim shel-kha me-ha-shul-khan. תוריד את הרגליים שלך מהשולחן.
What's the situation? (What's up?) ma ha-ma-tsav? מה המצב?
Is the store still open? ha-kha-nut a-da-yin ptu-kha? החנות עדיין פתוחה?
AND ve..., u... ו...
Jacob and Guy are coming over now. ya-a-kov ve-gai kof-tsim le-vi-kur akh-shav. יעקב וגיא קופצים לביקור עכשיו.
Religious Jews don't mix meat and milk. ye-hu-dim da-ti-im lo me-ar-be-vim ba-sar ve-kha-lav. יהודים דתיים לא מערבבים בשר וחלב.
We danced and ate at the wedding. ra-kad-nu ve-a-khal-nu ba-kha-tu-na. רקדנו ואכלנו בחתונה.
I like chicken and onions on my hummus. a-ni o-hev of u-ba-tsal im ha-khu-mus she-li. אני אוהב עוף ובצל עם החומוס שלי.
We have two girls and one boy. yesh la-nu shtei ba-not u-ben e-khad. יש לנו שתי בנות ובן אחד.
